Indiana Ice News Release

CHOPPED: The Ice came up with two narrow misses last weekend, falling to the Muskegon Lumberjacks in back-to-back contests on Thursday and Friday. It took seven rounds in a shootout to decide a winner in Thursday's 3-2 shootout loss to Muskegon. Woody Hudson (G, A) and Peter Hand (2A) finished the evening with multiple point efforts, while Austin Ortega added another goal in the contest. Hand (G, A) and Drew Smolcynski (G, A) led the Ice on Saturday in a 4-3 setback to the "Jacks," while Zach Aman scored the other Indy goal.

COMINGS AND GOINGS: The Ice traded forward Robbie Baillargeon on Sunday to the Omaha Lancers in exchange for two affiliate players from Omaha and the Lancers' first and sixth round picks in the 2013 USHL Draft. In addition, Indiana added forward Jason Salvaggio to the roster. The 6-1, 190-pound winger is the leading scorer for the Selects Academy hockey program in Connecticut, where he is coached by former Ice assistant coach Matt Plante.

HOT HAND: After spending nearly a month on injured reserve, defenseman Peter Hand has been lighting up the scoring column, registering ten points (2G, 8A) in eight games since returning to the active roster in late November. The veteran rearguard has also logged four multiple-point efforts during that span while recording a +8 plus-minus rating. Through 16 games this season, Hand's 11 points (2G, 9A) have already matched his 11 points (2G, 9A) from the last two seasons.

THREE ACES: Indy holds three of the USHL's top ten goal scorers in the trio of Austin Ortega, Drew Smolcynski and Brian Morgan. Ortega is third in the league with 16 goals, while Smolcynski and Morgan's 13 goals place each forward in a four-way tie for sixth place in the USHL. Ortega enters this weekend's play on a three-game point streak and he leads all Ice players in points (29), goals (16) and assists (13) and is tied with Morgan for first with three game-winners. Smolcynski tops all Icemen with five power play goals and two shorthanded tallies.

PLAYER VOICES: Drew Smolcynski has five points (3G, A) in his last four games...Defenseman Joe Fiala has three assists and a +5 plus-minus rating in his last five games...Rinat Valiev has three assists in his last three games.

TEAM TIDBITS: Indy is 6-4-0 against this weekend's opponents (Team USA-1-1-0, Chicago- 2-1-0, Green Bay- 3-2-0)...The Ice is 4-0-2 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse over the past two seasons and has outscored opponents 17-10 with two shutouts in the process....All four games under head coach Jeff Brown have been one-goal affairs with the Ice sporting a record of 2-1-1...Indy is fifth in the USHL on the power play (20.0%), but 15th on the penalty kill (77.8%).
