Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (September 10, 2009) - The Youngstown Phantoms are heading west to Chicago this weekend for their first-ever USHL preseason games, but a member of this year's team has already made an impression in another of America's most powerful cities.
Phantoms forward Ryan Jasinsky has drawn attention this week while attending the Washington Capitals' rookie camp in Arlington, Va. He's garnered interest in the hockey world for both his rugged on-ice talents as well as his mixed martial arts training methods, as chronicled on www.youngstownphantoms.com in this Aug. 27 player profile.
Among the intrigued in our nation's capital is Washington Post sports columnist Dan Steinberg, who interviewed Jasinsky for an item in his washingtonpost.com blog, D.C. Sports Bog. Steinberg spoke with Jasinsky after camp attendees hopped off the main ice sheet at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, the Capitals' official practice facility just a few miles from downtown Washington.
Jasinsky, who played the previous two seasons with Victoriaville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, is one of 23 young players hoping to catch the eye of Capitals hockey operations gurus like 2008 NHL Coach of the Year Bruce Boudreau, General Manager George McPhee and Director of Player Development Steve Richmond.
"I saw Ryan play in Victoriaville and knew that he was big and tough," said Richmond last month. "We're lacking in young toughness in our organization because those types of guys are hard to find. It's a difficult job, but what we want to find out about Ryan is his level of skill and hockey sense. We decided to bring him in and get a close look at what he can do."
Camp concludes Friday, Sept. 11 with a trip to Voorhees, N.J., for a game against the Philadelphia Flyers rookies at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone at 3 p.m. Capitals veterans report to training camp the next day, with a select few from this week's rookie convocation receiving an invitation to skate with Alex Ovechkin and company.
But while Jasinsky will be hoping for an extended stay inside the Beltway, his Phantoms teammates will square off with the Chicago Steel for back-to-back exhibition tilts Friday and Saturday at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Ill. The Steel return 10 players who saw action with last season's club that finished fifth in the East Division with a 31-17-2 record.
The puck will be dropped at 7:30 p.m. local time (8:30 Eastern) for both games as the Phantoms touch USHL ice for the first time. Follow the action on www.youngstownphantoms.com and Twitter as Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations Matt Gajtka will be blogging live from Chicagoland.
