Adirondack Phantoms News Release
PHILADELPHIA - Five different players scored and Scott Munroe made 27 saves as the Philadelphia Phantoms beat the Binghamton Senators 5-2 at the Wachovia Spectrum on Tuesday night. The win was Philadelphia's sixth in its last nine games and pulled the club within five points of an East Division playoff berth.
The Phantoms took a 1-0 lead on a Denis Tolpeko goal 4:09 into the second period. Jussi Timonen had the puck on the left point and wound up as if to shoot, but instead fed the puck to Tolpeko. The Russian rookie in turn slammed it home for the initial tally.
The lead became 2-0 just under 2 ½ minutes later, at the 6:33 mark. Eric Meloche carried the puck into the Binghamton end and fired a knuckleballer that froze goaltender Jeff Glass as it fluttered past his right shoulder.
Jared Ross scored his first as a Phantom to make it 3-0 at 7:56 of the frame. He was loitering in the Binghamton high slot when a Senator defenseman granted Ross the puck on a clearing attempt. The dimunitive center unleashed a super-sized slapshot that beat Glass, grazed the bottom of the crossbar and went in for the unassisted marker.
But Binghamton charged back with two goals of its own, both from Josh Hennessey. The first came at the 8:40 mark on a delayed penalty against the Phantoms. Hennessey was the extra man off the bench and took the puck as he skated into the play. He went to the bottom of the right circle before snapping a wrister through traffic and past Scott Munroe to put the Senators on the board.
Hennessey's second came as a result of being in the correct location at the proper moment. A shot from the left point went through a Plinko board of skates in front and came right to Hennessey on the right post, and he buried it at 11:27 to make it a 3-2 affair.
The Phantoms jumped back out to a two-goal lead on a 5-on-3 man advantage eight minutes into the third period. Mark Cullen was caring for the puck on the right side when he observed a passing lane that ended on the stick of Matt Ellison. Cullen ripped a pass through the opening and Ellison one-timed it home to make it 4-2. Pete Zingoni closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal with 1:12 remaining.
The win gave the Phantoms 13 out of a possible 18 points in the recent nine-game span and took the club to 56 points on the year, five behind Albany and Bridgeport's tie at 61 points apiece in the fourth-place slot. It was Philadelphia's seventh win in as many games against the Senators this year. Also, the win gave the Phantoms their 1,000th standing point of their 11-year history, with an all-time record of 441-302-65-36-17.
Philadelphia now embarks on a three-game weekend swing through New England that will take them to Providence, Bridgeport and Portland.
