Youngstown Phantoms News Release

BENSENVILLE, Ill. (September 11, 2009) - Early third-period goals by Brett Gensler and Nick Czinder added drama in the Youngstown Phantoms' preseason opener, but the Chicago Steel rode early and late surges to a 6-2 win at The Edge Ice Arena Friday night.

Gensler (2:13) and Czinder (5:26) each tipped long shots under Chicago goaltender Nick Pisellini in the final frame, marking the first USHL goals for the Youngstown franchise. However, Mark Anthoine's four-point night (two goals, two assists) proved too much to overcome in the exhibition lid-lifter.

The Phantoms and Steel will square off again Saturday night at 7:30 Central time, 8:30 Eastern from the Chicagoland suburb of Bensenville.

Alex Krushelnyski gave the Phantoms a rude welcome to the USHL, as he deposited an Anthoine centering pass behind Jordan Tibbett 37 seconds into the game. Anthoine helped the Steel barrage continue at 4:52 by backhanding his own rebound high into the goal while Chicago enjoyed its first power play.

Another man-advantage goal, this time by British Columbia native Sahir Gill at 6:36, pushed the Chicago lead to 3-0 and made the Steel 2-for-2 on the power play. Youngstown answered back with sustained pressure during the remainder of the period, actually outshooting Chicago 13-8 in the opening stanza.

The Phantoms continued to force a territorial advantage in the second period, but it was the Steel who earned the only goal of the middle frame. Taking a drop pass from Greg Wolfe at the left faceoff dot, Anthoine unleashed a wrist shot that caromed off Youngstown defender Ben Paulides and through Tibbett to make it 4-0. The goal, Anthoine's second power-play tally of the evening, came at 16:27.

After the Phantoms took a valiant shot at a comeback in the opening moments of the third, Wolfe and Mac Olson scored in quick succession midway through the frame to remove any doubt from the outcome.
