Petes Shut out 2-0 by Battalion
September 12, 2013 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Peterborough Petes News Release
With two thirds of the Petes 2013 pre-season in the books, the newly relocated North Bay Battalion squad came to Peterborough for the first of two games between the teams this weekend. The Petes played a hard fought game and generated plenty of scoring chances, but Battalion goalie Jake Smith and his team-mates out-matched the home town Petes on this night, coming away with a 2-0 victory.
The pace of the game was never slow, but both Petes goalie Michael Giugovaz and the Battalion's Smith were solid throughout. After the two teams traded chances, at 6:18 of the first period North Bay found the back of the net with a goal from 2013 first round priority selection Brett McKenzie assisted by right winger Calvin Gomes.
Just a few minutes later, though, the Petes offence really came alive including a power play that kept the Battalion in their own end for a full two minutes. However, despite the crisp passing and fluid cycle, the Petes could not beat Smith who made several remarkable post-to-post stops.
The defensive battle continued in the second stanza with both Giugovaz and Smith making several fantastic saves each. Each team had their share of powerplay attempts but could not prevail. Battalion Head Coach Stan Butler's reserved coaching style was on display in the second period in particular with few real scoring chances registered by either team despite lots of shots on goal. At the end of the second period the shots were 26-22 in the Petes favour.
The third period started with the home team on the powerplay once again, but the Battalion penalty kill unit was up to the task as they had been all game. Aside from not being able to put the puck in the net, though, the home team's 5-on-4 unit appeared to be in mid-season form as it had throughout most of the game. Unlike in the second period, the Petes seemed poised to tie the game at one goal apiece but were continually stymied by Smith.
At 6:04 in the third the Battalion squashed Peterborough's momentum with another goal. Mike Amadio scored from Alex Henriksson to bring the score to 2-0 for the visiting squad. The Petes would continue to put pressure on through the mid-way mark of the period but no bounces went the way of the maroon and white.
As the 10-minute mark ticked past the tempers started to flare at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The Petes tried to regain momentum through hard hits, but the 2-0 North Bay lead was enough to put the Petes on ice for the evening, and the game ended without much in the way of chances.
Smith made 38 saves earning the shut-out and the first star honours, while Giugovaz stopped 32 pucks. Some of the Petes pre-season discipline problems and special teams questions were answered on the night, but Jody Hull and his coaching staff will now look ahead to the rematch between these two clubs in Temischaming, Quebec on Saturday afternoon.
The Petes next home game is the 2013-2014 home opener on Thursday, September 19th at 7:05pm against the Kingston Frontenacs. Tickets are still available at the box office and online at www.gopetesgo.com.
