Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Cal Petersen will spend the next two seasons playing for the Black Hawks in Waterloo before joining the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the fall of 2014, the Hawks announced Monday.

The 6' 1," 175-pound goaltender is in his first full season with the Black Hawks after making his debut last winter. So far in 2012/13, Petersen is 2-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and recorded his first USHL shutout with 25 saves against the Omaha Lancers on October 13th. After that performance, he was named the United States Hockey League's Co-Reebok Goaltender of the Week. Including Petersen's statistics as an affiliate in 2011/12, he has a career mark of 5-1-0, with a GAA of 2.34 in league play. Petersen is a former member of the Chicago Young Americans and the Waterloo Warriors prior to that. He appeared during the 2012 USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game and has been graded by NHL Central Scouting as a candidate for the 2013 NHL Draft.

"Cal's focus and ability as a goaltender has allowed him to earn this opportunity with Notre Dame," said Black Hawks head coach P.K. O'Handley. "We're fortunate to have him for the rest of this season and next, and like all of our players, we want his time here to help make him successful on and off the ice when he moves to the next level."

Petersen's commitment to the Fighting Irish program gives Waterloo 15 current players committed to NCAA Division I schools. Teammate Vince Hinostroza is also a Notre Dame recruit and slated to arrive in South Bend next fall.

The Fighting Irish roster currently includes senior forward Nick Larson, who played for the Black Hawks in 2007/08 and 2008/09. At least one former Waterloo player has been on the Notre Dame roster every year since 2005/06.
