Petan Rejoins Mallards

MOLINE, Ill. - Forward Alex Petan has returned to the Quad City Mallards after being released from a professional tryout agreement by the American Hockey League's Cleveland Monsters, the Mallards announced today.

Petan, 24, scored two goals and registered four assists in 14 games with Cleveland after signing a PTO on February 14. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound, Delta, British Columbia, native has scored three times and notched five assists in a total of 19 AHL games this season with both the Monsters and the Iowa Wild. Petan has scored 13 goals and collected 16 assists for 29 points in 41 games with the Mallards.

Last season, Petan enjoyed a stellar senior year at Michigan Tech that saw him named a Second Team All-American, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Year, an All-WCHA First Team selection and a top ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, which is presented annually to the best college hockey player in the nation. Petan led the Huskies to a share of the WCHA regular season title while finishing first in the conference in points (29) and goals (16). Overall, Petan led Tech in goals (18) and points (33) and also picked up 15 assists in 36 games. He signed with Iowa upon the completion of his college career and added a goal and three assists in ten late-season AHL games to his banner campaign.

Petan rang up 54 goals and 74 assists for 128 points in 155 career collegiate games. In 2014-15 he earned All-WCHA Second Team honors while helping Michigan Tech to its first NCAA tournament berth in 34 years by posting collegiate career highs in points (40) and assists (25). Petan made an immediate splash when he was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team in 2012-13.

Before starring on the college stage, Petan played three seasons in junior ranks with the Burnaby/Coquitlam Express in the British Columbia Hockey League. Petan was named Most Valuable Player of the BCHL's Coastal Conference in 2011-12.

Gudbranson played in each of the Mallards' 72 games last season, recording five goals, 17 assists and 22 points in the process. He scored once and added three assists in 46 AHL games with the Iowa Wild as a rookie in 2014-15.

Prior to turning pro, Gudbranson skated in the Ontario Hockey League for four seasons with the Kinston Frontenacs and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Gudbranson accumulated 15 goals, 37 assists and 52 points in 243 career OHL games. He finished his junior career in 2013-14 by scoring seven goals, gathering eight assists and totaling 15 points in 66 games while helping the Greyhounds to a division title.

The Mallards return to action on the road tomorrow night against the Wichita Thunder. The Mallards next play at home Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Fort Wayne Komets. Friday also brings the return of $2 Dog/$2 Beer Night presented by 97X. Fans can enjoy $2 hot dogs and beers from iWireless Center concession stands during every Friday Mallards home game. In addition, t he Mallards have once again this season partnered with Metro to provide transit service between Augustana College and downtown Moline during all Friday home games. As part of Metro's unlimited ride program, Augustana riders can use their Augustana ID as their fare.
