San Jose Giants News Release

Juan Perez capped a four-hit, four-RBI night at the plate with a game- winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the San Jose Giants a 7-6 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Sunday evening in front of 4,934 fans at Municipal Stadium. In the opener of a three-game series, the Quakes rallied with four runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings before San Jose won it in the 10th. With the victory, the Giants (32-19) have won 16 out of their last 19 and have opened up a four-game advantage over the Modesto Nuts (27-22) for the top spot in the first half North Division race.

Perez (4-for-6, HR, 4 RBI), who also smacked his sixth home run of the season, led an 11-hit San Jose offensive attack. Ehire Adrianza (3- for-5, 2B, RBI, SB) added three hits while Charlie Culberson (2-for-4, 2 2B) and Wendell Fairley (2-for-3, SB) contributed two hits apiece.

With the game tied 6-6, Fairley began the 10th inning rally with a one- out infield single to shortstop. After James Simmons drew a four- pitch walk to put runners on first and second, Perez stepped to the plate and lined a single into right field. Fairley easily scored the game-winning run on the hit after Quakes right fielder Angel Castillo mishandled the ball in right.

Jason Stoffel (2-3) picked up the win after tossing 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen and allowing one unearned run and two hits.

The Giants took a 6-2 lead into the top of the ninth inning only to see Rancho Cucamonga score four times against relievers Ben Wilshire and Stoffel to tie the game. Wilshire (1/3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO) began the inning by inducing Castillo to fly out before Beau Brooks walked and Adam Younger belted a two-run homer to left center bringing the Quakes to within 6-4.

Darwin Perez then reached base safely on a bunt single before advancing to second on the play when first baseman Brandon Belt threw wildly to Wilshire covering the bag. Stoffel was then summoned and he promptly allowed an RBI single to Tyson Auer to make it 6-5. Auer then stole his league-leading 28th base of the season before advancing to third on a passed ball charged to catcher Johnny Monell. After Alexi Amarista drew a walk, Gabe Jacobo hit a sharp ground ball to Adrianza at shortstop. On the play, Amarista was attempting to steal and Adrianza's throw to the second baseman Culberson was late. Culberson then threw to first, but was unable to retire Jacobo, who officially reached on a fielder's choice as Auer scored the tying run. Stoffel did recover as the following hitter, Luis Jimenez, bounced into an inning-ending double play to third.

Stoffel then worked around a two-out walk to Brooks and a single from Younger in the top of the 10th to keep the score deadlocked.

San Jose initially took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Perez ripped a leadoff home run to deep left center field. Adrianza followed with a single, stole second and then scored on Belt's fielder's choice ground out.

After Rancho Cucamonga cut the Giants advantage in half in the fourth inning on Rian Kiniry's RBI groundout, San Jose exploded for four runs in the bottom of the frame. Culberson led off with a double off the fence in left before advancing to third on Drew Biery's ground out. Fairley followed by drawing a walk and then Simmons reached on a fielding error committed by the shortstop Perez as Culberson scored. Perez then grounded a single into left to score two more runs while Adrianza brought home the fourth run of the inning with an RBI double to the right center gap making it 6-1.

Justin Fitzgerald started on the mound for the Giants and tossed 5 2/3 innings with two runs (both earned) and six hits allowed. Fitzgerald walked three and struck out five. Scott Nestor (2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) relieved Fitzgerald with two outs in the sixth inning and kept the Quakes off the scoreboard until the ninth-inning rally.
