Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
San Jose, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped their first extra-inning game of the year on Sunday evening, falling to the San Jose Giants in ten innings, by a score of 7-6.
The Quakes rallied for four runs with one out in the ninth inning to tie the game, but saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, as the Giants got a run in the bottom of the tenth inning to take the opening game of the three-game series at San Jose Municipal Stadium.
Juan Perez's walk-off RBI single to right field scored pinch-runner Jose Medina with the game-winning run. Quakes' closer Eddie McKiernan (2-1) got himself into trouble, allowing a one-out infield single to Wendell Fairley. Medina came on as a pinch-runner, then moved to second base after McKiernan walked the number-nine hitter, James Simmons. Perez delivered his fourth hit of the game, a liner to right field that bounced on one hop, off the glove of right fielder Angel Castillo, allowing the winning run to plate without a throw.
The Quakes trailed 6-2 heading into the ninth inning, but put on a furious rally against Giants' reliever Ben Wilshire. Wilshire walked Beau Brooks on four pitches before Adam Younger homered to left-center field, making it 6-4. Darwin Perez then bunted his way aboard and advanced to second on a throwing error by first baseman Brandon Belt.
The Giants then made a pitching change, bringing closer Jason Stoffel (2-3) into the game to face Tyson Auer. Auer continued the rally by singling home Perez, making it a one-run game at 6-5. Auer then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball by catcher Johnny Monell. After Alexi Amarista walked, Gabe Jacobo delivered with a slow ground ball to shortstop Ehire Adrianza. Adrianza struggled to field the ball and wasn't able to record an out, as Auer scored to tie the game at 6-6. Stoffel caught a break though, as Luis Jimenez, who homered in the sixth, grounded into an inning-ending double-play.
Quakes' starter Orangel Arenas struggled in his debut, allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits with four walks, over four innings of work.
Perez not only had the game-winning hit in the tenth, he also homered to open the game, finishing with four hits and four RBIs to lead the Giants.
Christian Scholl pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Quakes.
The loss for the Quakes (28-23) ends their four-game winning streak and keeps them six back of division-leading Lake Elsinore, who lost on Sunday.
Tyler Chatwood (5-2) takes on Oliver Odle (5-0) of San Jose, at a special Memorial Day start time of 2:00pm, in the second game of the three-game set.
The Quakes will return from the current seven-game road trip on Thursday, June 3rd, as they open a four-game series against Lancaster. Saturday, June 5th is Studio Dental Fireworks Night at The Epicenter, as everyone will enjoy a post-game Fireworks Celebration thanks to Studio Dental and KOLA 99.9. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter very soon. Go Quakes!
