Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Minneapolis, MINN - With the 25th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs have selected Majors defenseman Stuart Percy. Percy becomes the highest NHL Draft pick in the history of the Majors. The previous high for the Majors was Mark Popovic who was selected 35th overall by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in 2001 and the highest pick since the team moved to Mississauga was Devante Smith-Pelly, who was drafted 42nd overall by the Anaheim Ducks last year.
Percy, 18, just finished his second season with the Majors where he established himself as a key member of Mississauga's blue line. He played his minor hockey with the Toronto Marlboros before the Majors made him a first round draft pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection when the team took him 15th overall. Stuart had a solid rookie season with three goals and 15 assists for 18 points in 52 games. This past season, he played in 64 games, increasing his point total to 34. He had an impressive plus 50 rating to go along with 50 penalty minutes. He participated in the Home Hardware Top Prospects game in January and while he wasn't a major factor on the scoresheet, his strong play was certainly noticed. During the MasterCard Memorial Cup, Percy was a rock on the Majors blue line and contributed with four points in five games, the second most on the Majors.
Percy will have a busy summer. In addition to preparing for next season with the Majors and getting used to life as a Maple Leaf's draft pick, he was recently invited to Hockey Canada's World Junior Development Camp.
