Philadelphia Union News Release

CHESTER, Pa. - Philadelphia Union and Penn Medicine, a leading academic medical center with a global reputation for excellence in health care, today announced a new multi-year partnership. The relationship spans the entirety of the Union organization, with Penn Medicine providing the official team doctor, as well as becoming the official health care provider, hospital system, and adult cancer treatment center of the Philadelphia Union, Union II, Union Academy, and WSFS Bank Sportsplex.

"Penn Medicine has established itself as a leader in healthcare, and we are fortunate to welcome them as a new partner of the Philadelphia Union," said Tim McDermott, President, Philadelphia Union. "Along with providing exceptional health care for the team, the partnership underscores our mutual dedication to excellence and integrity along with a collective focus on the health and well-being of our community. Together, we look forward to achieving new goals."

Penn Medicine and the Union will also collaborate on several initiatives to support the community of Chester, including a Community Refrigerator program to help battle food insecurity. A refrigerator, freezer and shelving will be installed at the Boys and Girls Club of Chester and will be continuously restocked throughout the year. Residents of Chester will be invited to a launch event that will serve as the kickoff to the Community Refrigerator. The event will include a free-of-charge farmers' market on the day to celebrate the installation. Additional impact programs will be developed in the first and subsequent years of the partnership to continue to engage and empower the community.

The two organizations are aligned in their passion for the role that sports, healthy foods and exercise play in supporting vibrant communities.

"This collaboration is a strong example of our commitment to the health and well-being of the communities we serve," said Kevin B. Mahoney, chief executive officer of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. "I am looking forward to partnering with Philadelphia Union on programs that will create a positive impact on the lives of Chester residents, and beyond."
