Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
HERSHEY, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins battled back from two different one-goal deficits in Game 7 of the Atlantic Division Final with the Hershey Bears, but the Penguins still fell 3-2 in overtime on Sunday night at Giant Center.
Travis Boyd, who had been held without a goal in the previous six games of the series, scored at 10:57 of overtime to win the game for Hershey and send Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's season to an abrupt end.
"You had a feeling that with the way the game was and how the series has gone that this one was going to overtime," said Penguins captain Tom Kostopoulos, "I'm proud of how my teammates played tonight. Everybody showed up... I have to thank all my teammates for the way they worked all season long."
Dustin Gazley quickly got Hershey off to a 1-0 lead by scoring 1:33 into the game.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton responded with Matthias Plachta's first career Calder Cup Playoffs goal, tying the game on the power play at 7:15 of the opening frame.
The Bears took back the lead after Carter Camper pulled off a series of slick stickhandling moves and lifted the puck into the top of the net from his backhand, making it 2-1 with 1:17 to play in the second period.
Kael Mouillierat tied the game for the Penguins yet again, finding a loose puck sitting in the crease and putting it across the goal line at 3:53 of the third.
From there, both goalies - Casey DeSmith and Justin Peters - stood on their heads to keep the game knotted at 2-2, and so Game 7 went to overtime.
Boyd shuffled out from behind the Penguins cage and beat DeSmith over the glove for the game-winner just beyond the midway point of the extra frame.
DeSmith finished the night with 21 saves on 24 shots. Peters denied the Penguins on 32 of their 34 shots.
The Penguins went one-for-three on the man advantage, netting the only power play goal of the night. Hershey was held off the board on two power play opportunities. No power plays were awarded to either team after the first period.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's postseason run comes to an end with the loss. The Penguins wrap up the 2015-16 campaign with a 6-4 playoff record after a 43-27-4-2 regular season. Over the course of the year, the Penguins set a new franchise record with an 11-game winning streak, posted the biggest comeback in team history, saw three players named to the AHL's Second All-Star Team, and swept the Providence Bruins in the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.
