Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Richard Panik tallied a pair of goals as the Syracuse Crunch edged the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 2-1, on New Year's Eve at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
After a scoreless first, Panik put the Crunch ahead, 1-0, at 16:53 of the second as he caught up to Brett Connolly's clearing effort. The Syracuse right-winger then skated in on the breakaway before beating Brad Thiessen to the blocker side.
The Crunch added to their lead 38 seconds into the third, opening up the period on the power play. Stationed on the near post, Tyler Johnson put a rebound attempt wide of the net, but Panik gathered the puck off the back wall and banked a shot off Thiessen's pad across the goal line.
Working on the man-advantage late in the contest, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ended Dustin Tokarski's shutout bid with just one second remaining when Trevor Smith sailed a wrist shot from the near circle that beat the Crunch goaltender under the glove.
Thiessen made 33 saves in the game on 35 shots. Tokarski finished with 19 saves.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins head to Binghamton on Friday, Jan. 4 to face the Senators at 7:05PM. Individual seats for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com, and by calling 800-745-3000.
