Pels Return Home at .500

June 5, 2006 - American Association (AA)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pelicans are returning home after taking two of three games from both Fort Worth and El Paso. Pensacola reached the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 14-5 win in El Paso Sunday night and are now trailing Division leaders Coastal Bend by 4.5 games. If the Pelicans can manage to take two of three from the Cats this week they will move into a tie with them for second place in the Southern Division.

Fort Worth comes into Pensacola having lost four of their last six games and five of their last ten. The Cats are the reining Central Baseball League Champions and are perennial contenders. They will have Cory Walters pitching the first game against the Pelicans on Tuesday. Walters is coming off of a terrific outing against Pensacola in which he went seven innings and picked up his second win of the season.

In only three games this season against each other, the Pelicans and Cats have combined for 51 hits and 26 runs. Marc Mirizzi is batting .444 against the Pels and leading his team with four RBI. Ed Montague has dominated Fort Worth's pitching, hitting .636 against the Cats and has scored four runs.

Fort Worth standout Luke Hochevar will not be making a pitching appearance in Pensacola this series as he is projected to be drafted as high as fifth overall in this weekends Major League Draft. The dominant righty threw six innings against the Pelicans last week, giving up five hits and allowing no runs while striking out six. He was out dueled, however, by Pelican ace Rusty Begnaud who went seven innings, giving up only four hits while picking up the win.

Fans can purchase season tickets, group tickets, individual home game tickets, birthday parties, and corporate sponsorships by calling the Pelicans office at 934-8444.
