Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pelicans "scooped" up Corey Bass today, signing the 6'3" right-hander to contract for the 2009 season. Bass, 24, signed with the Pelicans after attending an open tryout this past Saturday, April 25. In total, more than 80 players tried out for Pelicans coaches in hopes of making the 2009 squad.

The Astros drafted Bass in the 2004 amateur entry draft. Bass spent the 2005 season pitching for the Greenville Astros, a rookie ball team in the Appalachian League. Bass posted a 2.93 ERA with a record of 3-3, a record he bested in 2006. That year Bass won five games and lost two, pitching 69.2 innings with an ERA of 3.75 and 47 strikeouts.

Following his success in Greenville, Bass moved up to the single-A Lexington Legends in 2007. In 31 games, Bass recorded 4 saves and netted a career best 58 strikeouts. The Astros promoted Bass to high-A Salem in 2008, where he pitched 129 innings with an ERA of 6.70 in 27 starts.

"Bass is a gritty young righty who attacks the strike zone," Nunnari noted. "We clocked him at the tryout between 90 and 93. We're glad to add another strong arm to our roster heading into spring training. We expect some good competition in camp to lead us into a strong start to the season."

With the addition of Corey Bass, the Pelicans roster now stands at the pre-season league limit of 28, including 15 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders, and five outfielders. The Pelicans commence spring training on May 2. Spring training is open to the public.
