Augusta GreenJackets News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC: The Augusta GreenJackets and Myrtle Beach Pelicans squared off again at TicketReturn.com Field for another thrilling game with a difficult ending for the GreenJackets. The Pelicans came back from a 4-0 deficit early to defeat Augusta in the ninth inning as they walked off their third victory of the series, 5-4.

The GreenJackets picked up right where they left off from the night prior as they jumped on the board early with three, first-inning runs starting with a two-run triple from Geraldo Quintero to give Augusta a 2-0 advantage. Adam Zebrowski would make it 3-0 on an RBI groundout to plate home Quintero.

Another run would score in the third inning off the bat of Brandol Mezquita who dumped a single into center, bringing in Cal Conley from second base to make it 4-0.

But Myrtle Beach would get that all back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single from James Triantos, a two-run triple by Kevin Alcantara, and a sacrifice fly from Peter Matt to even the score at four.

The pitching took over again as each team's middle reliever made scoring tough to come by. JJ Niekro was once again magnificent in relief of Adam Shoemaker. Niekro pitched a season-best 4.1 innings allowing no runs on 3 hits while punching out 6, also a season-high.

The Pelicans got great work from left-hander Chase Watkins who dealt 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball with 2 hits allowed and 5 strikeouts to pick up his starting pitcher Richard Gallardo. The southpaw really did his part stranding Augusta baserunners as the GreenJackets left 12 runners on base, 9 of them coming after the fourth inning.

Elison Joseph took over in the eighth inning for Niekro and faced trouble as the Pelicans loaded up the bases, but the hard-throwing right-hander got himself out of the jam by striking out the side to keep the game deadlocked at four.

Augusta put two runners on in the ninth inning but Tyler Santana kept them both out there to give Myrtle Beach a chance to win it in the bottom half with a run. They would need three batters to achieve their third walk-off of the series as James Triantos singled to shallow right field with runners at first and second, with the winning run scoring on an error on the throwback into the infield.

The nine-game road trip concludes on Easter Sunday in Myrtle Beach as the GreenJackets will go for the series split against the Pelicans as the same matchup that began the series on Tuesday will repeat itself in the finale as Landon Leach faces Porter Hodge for the Pelicans. First pitch comes from TicketReturn.com Field at 5:05 p.m.

The opening homestand at SRP is fast approaching as it gets started on April 19 as the GreenJackets face the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Houston Astros) for a full week of fun promotions starting with a rally towel giveaway on Tuesday and Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday, a visit from the Atlanta Braves World Champions Trophy on Friday, and a Fireworks Extravaganza on Saturday night.
