Pelicans Sweep the Senators Out of Town

Pelicans’ fans enjoyed another pleasant night under a bright full moon. The ‘Pels were able to complete the sweep of the Jackson Senators tonight, winning 4-3. Pensacola won the first game 6-1 and the second game 5-4.

Pensacola pitcher, Phil Devey, shut-out the Senators in seven innings of work while striking out nine and allowing just two hits. The win improves DeveyÂ’s record to 3-1 and the Pelicans record to 12-14, only a half game out of first place.

Andy Wilson got things started for the Pelicans in the first inning when he singled and advanced to second when Joe Espada laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt. Big Larry Bethea then singled to left center scoring Wilson for the Pelicans first run of the game. Pensacola struck again in the 7th when Carlos Mendoza doubled to lead off the inning. George Branch then singled moving Mendoza to third base. Matt Tindell then drove in his first run of the season, scoring Mendoza. Andy Wilson then doubled deep to left field scoring Branch to make the score 3-0. Joe Espada then hit a deep fly ball sacrifice to score Tindell, which would be the game winning run. Jackson was able to score one run in the 8th to make the score 4-1 going in to the 9th.

Things once again got interesting in the Senators half of the 9th. Jackson was able to get runners on the corners with nobody out. Pelicans pitcher, Jimmy Gregg, then struck out Nick Sorenson and Matt Sanchez for outs one and two. Josh Hoffpauir then singled to score Tyson Boston making the score 4-2 and Asdrubal Oropeza got yet another single, scoring Azarias Corbeil, making the score 4-3. That is where it would end as Gregg got Selwyn Langaigne to ground out Joe Espada at short stop, to get his 4th save of the year.

The Pelicans have now won 8 of the last 10 games and are on a 4-game winning streak. The Pelicans have tomorrow off and the ntravel to Amarillo to play a 4-game series.
