Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Pelicans jumped out to an early six run lead and held on late to defeat the Potomac Nationals 6-4 in game two of the Mills Cup Championship series at BB&T Coastal Field. The series is now level at one game apiece with games three, four and five (if necessary) scheduled for Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, Virginia. The Pelicans go in search of their first Carolina League title since 2000.
After failing to score a run in game one, the Pelicans cracked the scoreboard in the second inning of game two. Ernesto Mejia hit a single down the left field line. Tyler Flowers was then hit by a pitch. With two aboard, Travis Jones hit a towering home run over Land Shark Landing to give the Birds an early 3-0 lead. It was his first home run since July 23rd against the Frederick Keys.
In the third, Ernesto Mejia hit a one out solo home run over Land Shark Landing to give the Pelicans a 4-0 lead. It was his first home run and team-best eighth RBI of the playoffs.
The Potomac Nationals made a monumental mistake in the fourth that allowed the Pelicans to add onto their lead. With Brandon Hicks and Gorkys Hernandez aboard at third and first respectively, Francisco Plasencia badly misplayed a hard liner by Willie Cabrera, which scored both runners. The two run error gave the Pelicans a 6-0 advantage.
Carlos Rivas rebounded from a rough Southern Divisional series start and turned in six excellent innings against Potomac. In blanking the P-Nats, Rivas gave up just three hits, while striking out four. Rivas displayed tremendous command of all his pitches.
The Potomac Nationals worked their back into the game in the seventh inning. Craig Kimbrel came on in relief and walked the first batters of the inning, Jhonatan Solano and Boomer Whiting. After a Dan Lyons single loaded the bases, Michael Martinez hit a two run single up the middle to cut the deficit to 6-2. Later in the inning, Dee Brown hit a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Lyons.
In the eighth, Jhonatan Solano hit a solo home run against reliever Nick Fellman to trim the score to 6-4. However, in the ninth, Ferdin Tejeda put the clamps on Potomac to level the series at one game apiece.
The Pelicans will hit the road for game three of the Mills Cup Championship series to be contested at Pfitzner Stadium on Thursday, September 11th at 7:05 p.m. RHP Ryne Reynoso (1-0, 3.86) will make the start for the Pelicans, while LHP Ross Detwiler (1-0, 0.00) will go for Potomac.
