Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LHP Chris Hernandez (4-1, 1.78) at LHP Robbie Erlin (3-1, 2.22)

HOW TO STOP A LOSING STREAK: This weekend's sweep in Wilmington marks the Birds' third three-game losing streak of the season. After the previous two they've bounced back nicely. When the Pelicans dropped three straight from April 27-29, they recovered by taking two of three from Frederick while winning four out of five overall. When they lost the first three games in Salem May 5-7, they came back and won the finale to start a four-game winning streak.

JOE YEAH!: Despite taking the tough-luck loss in Wilmington on Sunday, Joe Wieland lowered his league-leading ERA to a paltry 1.73. He leads the loop with 61 strikeouts and his 0.88 WHIP is second only to teammate Robbie Erlin. Incredibly, the right-hander has walked only two batters in 51 innings as a starter.

JOE NO!: Pelicans lefty reliever Joe Ortiz saw his 20-inning scoreless streak come to an end on Sunday. After Carlo Testa singled off Joe to bring in inherited runner Whit Merrifield with the go-ahead run in the eighth, Rey Navarro doubled to score Testa for the first run charged to the southpaw in his last ten outings. The last time the Venezuelan gave up a run was on a Garabez two-run homer in the Pelicans' first road game on April 12 in Frederick. Still, Ortiz leads the Carolina League in fewest baserunners per nine innings by a reliever (17 BR/21.1 IP).
