Fort Worth Cats News Release

Pensacola avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of Fort Worth by hanging on for a 13-12 victory on Sunday afternoon at LaGrave Field.

With the game tied 1-1 in the third inning, Cats' third baseman Terence Green belted his fourth home run of the season, a three-run blast to give the Cats a 4-1 lead.

Pensacola rallied quickly, however, getting a three-run shot of their own from third baseman Heath Kelly in the top of the fourth.

The next inning, Pensacola took a 7-4 lead on a towering three-run homer from first baseman Larry Bathea.

The Pelicans would never look back as they added three runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth while the Cats managed to score five more runs to make it a 13-9 game going into the ninth inning.

After the Pelicans were retired, the Cats scored three times in the ninth inning on a Dennis Pelfry two-run homer and a wild pitch to narrow the Pensacola lead to 13-12, but Jim Essian grounded to first with the tying run at second base to stop Fort Worth rally.

The 13 runs, 17 hits and 5 walks allowed by Cats' pitching were all season highs.

Fort Worth starter Dave Stevens (2-2) after he went just 4 2/3 and permitted seven runs on nine hits. Santos Hernandez (1-0) earned the victory as he worked 5 2/3 innings and allowed five earned runs on four hits. Penscola DH Mike Rodriguez was 4-fo-5 with four RBI in the game. Green for the Cats was 3-for-4 with three runs driven in.

The loss drops the Cats record to 10-13 on the season. They have Monday off before travelling to Shreveport for a brief two-game series with the Sports beginning on Tuesday night.

Left-hander Allen Davis (2-1) will pitch for the Cats.
