Pelicans and Senators Engage in Slug-fest

June 8, 2005 - Central Baseball League (Central League)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release

It was a hitters night as the Pelicans and Senators combined for 17 runs on 23 hits, four of them being homeruns which were all hit by Jackson hitters. Jackson used those homeruns to beat the Pelicans tonight 12-5.

The highlight for the Pelicans was Juan Rocha. Trailing 3-0 in the first inning, Rocha came up to the plate with Joe Espada on first base that singled earlier. He hit a fastball through the left side of the infield for his first of the game and 1,000 hit as a professional baseball player. After the baseball was tossed into the dugout for safe keeping , the Pelicans took the lead by scoring three runs in the inning. After Rocha singled, Larry Bethea singled to left field to load the bases for Nestor Smith. On the 10th pitch of the at-bat, Smith lined a bases clearing double to center field to give the Pelicans the 3-2 lead.

The lead didn't last long as Jackson scored three runs in the 2nd and three more in the 3rd. The Senators were led by Erick Mejias who in those two innings had two hits, three RBI and scored twice. His big hit came in the 3rd when he hit a two-run shot to make the score 8-3.

Pensacola managed to score two runs in the bottom of the third but would not be enough. Nestor Smith hit a two RBI double down right field line that scored Rocha and Branch who singled earlier. That made the score 8-5.

Senators starting pitcher, Rusty Camp settled down and threw seven innings and gave up five runs on 11 hits and struck out seven to improve to 3-3 on the year.

On the mound for the Pelicans was Byron Batson who suffered his third loss of the season and is now 4-3 on the year. Bubba Dobson and Josh Courage came in to finish the game for Batson.

These two teams will face off tomorrow night at 6:35. Jeff Norris (1-1) is on the mound for Pensacola and Ryan Snyder (1-2) will take the ball for Jackson.
