Pelicans Acquire Two from League Draft
Published on April 6, 2006 under American Association (AA)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The Pelicans are proud to announce the signing of first baseman Tim Dorn and right-handed pitcher Tony Pierce. Both players were acquired at the 2006 American Association of Independent Professional Baseball try-out camp and draft conducted at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, Texas April
3 - 5.
Dorn, a power-hitting Californian, was the first round selection, 8th overall, for the Pensacola Pelicans. The 6'8, 245-pound monster was originally drafted in the 21st round of the 2001 Major League Baseball draft by the Detroit Tigers but opted to instead attend Cal State Northridge. After a solid year with Cal State Northridge, where he hit six home runs, drove in 20, and scored 24 runs off 32 hits in only 35 games, he was drafted again, this time by the Seattle Mariners in the 14th round of the MLB draft.
With their second round pick, the Pelicans selected right-handed pitcher James Cooper Jr. and then promptly traded him to the Sussex Skyhawks of the Can-Am League for right-handed pitcher Tony Pierce, who originally signed with the Atlanta Braves and most recently released by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pierce, a Columbus, GA native, possesses a powerful arm and consistently throws in the low to mid 90's.
