The Poop from Scoop...

Pelicans on Verge of Winning First Half

With only 14 games left in the first half of the season, Pensacola is in the driver's seat. With this current winning streak (at 12 games), going from last (5-12) to first (20-14) in two weeks, the Pelicans have a game and a half lead in the East Division and are knocking on the play-off door.

The Central Baseball League is split into two halves, 48 games in each. The winner of the first half is guaranteed a spot in the play-offs at the conclusion of the regular season. Winners of the first half in each division will be the first half champions of either the East or West Division of the Central Baseball League. That is why this current run by the Pelicans is so important. All games are important but by winning the first half championship, your Pelicans would be guaranteed a spot at the end of the regular season to play for the Central Baseball League Championship.

The play-off system works to narrow down the league to a one team champion. The winner of the first half would play the winner of the second half in the first round of the play-offs in both the East and West Division of the Central Baseball League. If the same team wins both halves, they would then play the second place finisher of the second half in their division of the Central Baseball League.

Pelicans Split Double Header

Things seemed to be right on track for Pensacola as they won the first game of the double header in decisive fashion, 11-0. However, game two proved to be the end to Pensacola's franchise record setting run of 13 consecutive wins.

In game one, Pelicans pitcher Josh Kranawetter, shut out the Dillas, giving up only two hits and striking out 12. This was Kranawetter's fourth consecutive win, improving his record to 4-2. This was also his fourth game with 10 or more strikeouts.

The Pelicans did all the offensive damage in the third inning, batting around and scoring seven runs on seven hits. Rafeal Alvarez had a two RBI double to make the score 2-0. Larry Bethea also doubled scoring one. Andy Wilson got two hits in the inning, extending his consecutive game hitting streak to 26. A couple walks, errors and hits by Josey Shannon, Wilson and Bethea later and the score was 7-0. Heath Kelly later homered in the fifth to make the score 8-0. The Pelican bats added three more runs in the sixth, led by Alvarez who hit a triple into the right center field gap scoring one. The final score was 11-0, improving Pensacola's record to 21-14.

In game two, things got rocky for the Pelicans early. Amarillo scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the third to jump out to an early lead. Pensacola mixed in a couple runs, one being a homerun off the bat of Matt Tindell, to make the score 8-2 at the end of three. Dillas catcher Jeremy Todd hit a three run blast into the trees to make the score 4-0 in the first. In the third, Amarillo scored four runs on three hits, two walks and one Pelican error. Amarillo added one more in the fifth to make the score 9-2.

The Pelicans were not about to lose their winning streak in such a fashion. They put a six spot on the board in the sixth to make the score 9-8. Mike Rodriguez came on to pinch hit with the bases loaded and sent a Steve Singleton fast ball into the party deck for a grand-slam, making the score 9-7. Andy Wilson and Alvarez both walked and Larry Bethea singled scoring Wilson to make the score 9-8. That is where is would end, stopping Pensacola's comeback and their 14th consecutive win.

Another streak was also stopped this game, Andy Wilson went 0-2 with two walks ending his 26 game hitting streak, which was the best in independent baseball.

Pensacola falls to 21-15, still in first place of the East Division with only 12 games left in the first half. Amarillo got their first of the series improving their record to 10-25.
