Pedro Martinez to Rehab at Coca-Cola Park

July 30, 2009 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

(Allentown, Pa.) - The Philadelphia Phillies announced today that three-time Cy Young Award winner RHP Pedro Martinez is scheduled to continue his Major League rehab at Coca-Cola Park when the IronPigs host the Columbus Clippers on Friday -- a game that is already sold out. Fans are encouraged to head to Coca-Cola Park early due to an anticipated high volume of traffic for the 7:05 p.m. starting time. Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network is the exclusive sponsor of all Major League rehabilitation appearances at Coca-Cola Park.

The Phillies signed Martinez, 37, on July 15 to a one-year deal and immediately placed him on the 15-day Disabled List with a mild shoulder strain. He began his rehab with Advanced-A Clearwater this past Sunday but had his scoreless outing cut short after just an inning and a third due to rain. The native of Manoguayabo, Dominican Republic, last appeared in a Major League game with the New York Mets on September 25, 2008.

Martinez is one of just eight Major Leaguers to ever win the Cy Young Award at least three times, and only one of four pitchers in baseball history to win the award in both the National League (1997) and American League (1999, 2000) - a list that consists of Gaylord Perry, Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson. Martinez is also seven-time All-Star (1996-99, 2002, 2005-06) who joins the Phillies organization with a career record of 214-99 (.684) and a 2.91 ERA in 467 games (400 starts) for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1992-93), Montreal Expos (1994-97), Boston Red Sox (1998-2004) and New York Mets (2005-08). Last year, he went 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA in 20 starts for the Mets and this past March he pitched for the Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classic - tossing six innings of scoreless relief in two games.

Immediately following the series finale on Friday at 7:05 p.m., a post-game fireworks show will begin as part of the Friday Night Fireworks Series presented by Haldeman Ford/Lincoln/Mercury. Also, Fly-Away-Friday presented by the Lehigh Valley International Airport will award a lucky fan a trip for two to Florida on Allegiant Airlines. Also on Friday, widely-popular Rally - a mascot that specializes in high-energy stunts and skits - will be entertaining fans of all ages at Coca-Cola Park.

Fans are reminded that there are three entry points for parking and are encouraged to use the Dauphin Street entrance when traveling from downtown Allentown. In addition to the Dauphin Street entrance, entry to Coca-Cola Park can be gained off American Parkway and Union Boulevard. Preferred/Handicapped Parking access is available via American Parkway only.

The cost of parking for all IronPigs home games is $3 per vehicle.

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs are dedicated to providing family-friendly entertainment and are the only Minor League team to offer bubbles to fans entering the AT&T Plaza and balloons for all children exiting Coca-Cola Park.

Single-game tickets, mini-plan packages and group tickets for all remaining IronPigs home games presented by Capital BlueCross, are on sale now and can be purchased at the Coca-Cola Park Ticket Office, online at www.ironpigsbaseball.com or by calling (610) 841-PIGS.
