Pederson Strikes Again, Quakes Win in 9th

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Quakes let a five-run lead slip away at The Epicenter on Wednesday evening, but Joc Pederson's two-out walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth saved them, as Rancho won their fourth straight game with a 7-6 victory over the Stockton Ports.

With the game tied at 6-6 in the last of the ninth, Casio Grider got a two-out rally going against Ports' reliever Blake Treinen (6-7). Grider blooped a broken-bat double down the left-field line, putting the winning run in scoring position. Gabe Suarez then worked Treinen for a walk, getting Pederson to the plate. Stockton then made a move, as Zack Thornton came out of the bullpen to try and force extras. Pederson went opposite-field on the very first pitch though, lining one all the way to the warning track as Grider crossed home plate with the winning run, giving the Quakes their fifth one-run win over Stockton this year.

Rancho built a big lead, behind home runs from Chris O'Brien and Pedro Baez, taking a 3-0 lead over Stockton starter Josh Bowman in the second.

The Ports got a run back in the fourth against Brandon Martinez, as A.J. Kirby-Jones blasted his first of two homers on the night, making it 3-1.

The Quakes erupted for three in the bottom of the fourth though, as Jonathan Garcia, Suarez and Pederson all drove in a run, giving Rancho a 6-1 advantage.

Martinez couldn't hold the lead though, as a wild pitch gave Stockton a run in the sixth and four more tied the game in the seventh, highlighted by Kirby-Jones' three-run homer.

Eammon Portice (1-2) earned his first victory in a Quakes' uniform, pitching 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, including a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the ninth.

Quakes' starter Jarret Martin had a solid debut, pitching three innings of one-hit scoreless ball in the no-decision.

The Quakes (23-28, 60-61) remain two games back of Lancaster and three games back of Lake Elsinore in the Wild Card standings, as both those clubs won their respective home games on Wednesday night. Rancho will look to sweep the three-game set and the six-game season-long series over the Ports on Thursday night, sending JonMichael Redding (7-6) to the mound against Stockton's Sean Murphy (6-6) at 7:05pm.
