Anderson Joes News Release
ALBANY, Ga. -- Joes starter Dallas Mahan took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth inning at South Georgia on Tuesday, but the good times early turned into late dread, as the Peanuts scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 3-2 win over the Joes at Paul Eames Park.
One day after scoring a team-record 14 runs, Anderson was stymied at the plate Tuesday, held to just two runs on four hits and not scoring until the top of the sixth against South Georgia starter Shannon Wirth.
It didn't matter early, though, as Mahan allowed nothing.
But after the Joes scored Rafael Alvarez on Peanut Johnny Washington's fielding error in the sixth, South Georgia responded instantaneously. Curtis Goodwin's RBI single drove in Washington to tie the game in the bottom of the inning, Washington having broken Mahan's no-hitter with a lead-off double in the frame
Anderson (12-13, 25-45 overall) then retook the lead in the eighth, when Hector Borg reached on a dropped third strike to lead off the inning and later scored on Washington's second error of the night.
South Georgia (16-8, 49-19), though, saved its best for last. Playing their first game after the announcement that Wally Backman has stepped down as South Georgia manager, the Peanuts put four straight runners on in the eighth. The Goobers scored their runs on a pinch-hit single by Kyle Keen and a fielder's choice that saw drawn-in Joes 2B Brandon Carter make a diving stop but late throw to home on a play at the plate. Interestingly, Washington scored the run from third, allowing both of Anderson's runs to score on his errors but also scoring twice for his own team.
Mahan finished the night with the loss, dropping to 2-1. All three runs were charged to him as he pitched 7.1 innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out two.
Wirth pitched brilliantly for South Georgia. Less than a week after he allowed nine runs in 2.1 innings in a loss to Anderson, Wirth earned the win after pitching eight innings, while giving up four hits and four walks with two Ks. Drew Shetrone earned the save for South Georgia, his 10th of the year.
Wednesday, the Joes and Peanuts meet for the final time this season in the rubber match of the series. If the Joes win, it would be their third straight series win. The Peanuts, though, have lost only one series at home all season.
Pitching probables are Dustin Taylor (6-2, 4.01 ERA) for South Georgia and Dave Rider (0-0, 5.19), making his first start of the year for Anderson.
First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
