Peanuts Lose on Walk-Off Homer
July 31, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release
It looked as if the South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, and the Anderson Joes were going into extra innings for the second game in a row. After a three-run comeback in the top of the ninth, the Peanuts lost on a walk-off two-run home run from Anderson's Desi Wilson by a score of 7-5.
The game started well for the Peanuts. Curtis Goodwin walked to lead off the game and advanced to third on a Joey Hooft single. Doc Brooks then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Goodwin and give the Peanuts a 1-0 lead. The Joes tied the game up in the fifth inning when Rafael Alvarez walked, stole second and score on a Wilson single.
The Peanuts took the lead again in the seventh inning. Steve Butler led off with a single and then scored on a Kyle Keen triple. The Joes answered back again scoring two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take a three-run lead into the top of the ninth inning.
In a very exciting top of the ninth, Joey Muro came into pitch for the Joes. After retiring the Peanuts leadoff hitter, the lights went out in Anderson Memorial Stadium. After close to a 15 minute delay, Muro was unable to throw strikes anymore. The Joes ended up using three pitchers in the inning as the Peanuts tied the game up by scoring five runs. The big hit was a two-run single from Brooks with two outs in the inning. The inning could have featured more runs but a very questionable strike three call from Tom Stewart on Joey Hooft with the bases loaded had a profound impact on the inning.
With the score tied in the bottom of the ninth, Alvarez walked and Wilson hit a one-out home run to right field to win the game. It was only the third win of the season for Anderson over South Georgia on the season but the second in walk-off fashion.
Lost in the loss was a great performance from starting pitcher Jerome Gamble. He went six innings and allowed only one run with 11 strikeouts.
The rubber game will be held Wednesday night. Shannon Wirth gets the start for the Peanuts. First pitch is set for 7:05. The game can be heard in South Georgia on "1450 The Fan" and online at southgeorgiapeanuts.com.
