Peanuts Inaugural Spring Training Is Underway
May 8, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release
The South Georgia Peanuts Professional Baseball Club, presented by Security Bank, held its first ever practice on Tuesday morning. Most of the players reported to Albany on Monday and took physicals at the ballpark.
On Tuesday, the day started off with an 8:30 meeting where manager Wally Backman, his coaching staff and Peanuts front office staff addressed the players. The team then took the field at 9:00. After 45 minutes of stretching and throwing, the team spent a little more than an hour performing fundamental drills. The morning practice ended with an hour of batting practice for the position players while the pitchers ran a three-mile road course.
Right off the bat, Backman made it very clear the type of team he is looking to field.
"It's an exciting brand of baseball," The Peanuts Skipper said. "This team will be similar to the mid 80's Cardinals teams. We have tremendous speed on our club. We are going to steal a lot of bases. We are going to hit and run when pitchers are quick to the plate. We are going to force the defense to make mistakes."
The first day of spring training always includes players getting a feel for each other. While Backman has seen many of the players on the roster, there are also a substantial number of guys who he is getting his first look at. Backman was pleased overall with the effort the team put out on the first morning but there was one guy who really stood out.
"Jasha Balcom was very impressive," Backman said. "There were some other guys that impressed me as well but Jasha is a kid that really stood out. He has a lot of tools. I don't want to say he is not a five-tool player as he has a little pop, he hit a few home runs today but he is really a line-drive, speed type hitter."
Spring training will continue on Wednesday. The team will workout from 9:00 to 12:05. All spring training practices are open to the public.
Peanuts tickets are currently on sale by contacting the team office at (229) 435-8900! The home opener for the Peanuts is scheduled for May 24 against the Charlotte County Redfish. South Georgia Peanuts...One Shell of a Good Time!
