Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
The Pawtucket Red Sox could not hold a 2-1 lead in the top of the 9th-inning but then battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th before settling for a 3-3 tie against the Rochester Red Wings on Thursday afternoon in Fort Myers, FL.
Rochester rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the 9th inning off Deryk Hooker who allowed 3 straight hits with 2 outs in the 9th while trying to preserve a 2-1 lead. However, PawSox 2B Carlos Asuaje capped off his fine day by crushing a solo HR with one out in the bottom of the 9th to even matters at 3-3. The game was called after 9-innings.
Asuaje, who hit a combined .310 between Greenville and Salem (both Red Sox Single-A affiliates) last season, was 3-for-3 in the game as he had two singles, the clutch homer, a walk, and 2 stolen bases. Pawtucket's other runs also came via the longball as RF Keury De La Cruz cracked a solo HR in the 5th-inning and CF Shannon Wilkerson ripped a solo shot in the 8th-inning to give the PawSox a short-lived 2-1 lead.
Boston Red Sox reliever Craig Breslow started for the PawSox and gave up a run on 2 hits in the 1-inning of work. Veteran Dana Eveland tossed a perfect 2-inning. Keith Couch followed and was outstanding going 4 scoreless innings allowing 3 hits with 3 strikeouts. Miguel Celestino was sharp firing 2 hitless innings with 3 strikeouts. Hooker could not close it out however as he gave up 2 runs (1 earned) in the 9th.
The PawSox, who are now 3-3-1 in spring action, host the Norfolk Tides on Friday afternoon in Fort Myers.
