New Jersey Jackals News Release
Newark, NJ - Isaac Pavlik will have to wait one more start to get a chance at tying Joel Bennett's all-time record of 59 wins. Pavlik got the no-decision in the Jackals 6-4 win over the Newark Bears on the hot Thursday evening at Riverfront.
Before the game, the Newark Bears acquired former Jackals outfielder Danny Santiesteban - and in the sixth inning, his three-run home run off Zach Woods tied the game at four.
Two innings later, Carlos Guzman's sixth home run of the season put the Jackals up 5-4. Nick Giarraputo's ninth-inning solo shot added insurance, and Keith Cantwell threw a scoreless ninth, his fourth save of the year.
Back in the second, Jeff Lanning's third home run of the year put the Jackals up 2-0. Bryan Sabatella's two-run triple in the fifth gave the Jackals a 4-0 lead.
The win gives Woods his first decision of the year, while Luis Garcia, who gave up the eighth-inning home run to Guzman, drops to 0-1.
Newark starter Matt Fitton went six-and-two-thirds, allowing four runs on nine hits. Pavlik allowed three runs in five-and-two-thirds. He struck out seven without issuing a free pass.
The Jackals leave Newark taking three out of four to push their record to 20-12. Newark drops to 11-22, tied for last place in the Can-Am League with the Worcester Tornadoes.
Down 2-1 in the eighth, the Quebec Capitales responded with two runs, topping the Tornadoes 3-2 in Quebec. The win keeps them a game-and-a-half above the Jackals for first place in the Can-Am standings.
Tomorrow, the Jackals will face the American Association's Grand Prairie AirHogs for the first time in franchise history. New Jersey hands the ball to Kyle Greenwalt (2-1, 4.18 ERA). Grand Prairie, who just had their franchise-best 10-game win streak snapped yesterday, sends Lance Day (1-0, 3.00 ERA) to the hill.
