Patriots Outlast Dazzle In Overtime

March 20, 2005 - NBA G League (G League)
Roanoke Dazzle News Release

ROANOKE, Va. – The Fayetteville Patriots defeated the Roanoke Dazzle in overtime Saturday night 106-102 at the Roanoke Civic Center. Forward David Young tied a season record against the Dazzle (24-15) as he pummeled Roanoke with 36 points. Only beating the second place Dazzle once this season, and none at home, the Patriots (14-24) came in looking to hang on to any last hopes of making the playoffs.

“We need it,” said Fayetteville Head Coach Mike Brown. “We haven’t had real good success on the road this year. Eight out of our last ten games are on the road. We’re trying to sneak in the back door (to the playoffs).”

A close game the entire time, things looked desperate for the Dazzle, trailing by three when Miah Davis missed a three pointer with 3.1 seconds left in regulation. A long rebound by Seth Doliboa and two steps back proved to be the difference as Doliboa drained a game-tying three at the buzzer.

Little could be done in overtime, as the Dazzle shot only 25 % from the field. With Fayetteville perfect from the charity stripe in the extra frame, the gap got too wide for Roanoke to close.

“We’re a bunch of young guys,” said Dazzle Head Coach Kent Davison. “We have seven rookies. We’re playing our hearts out. We just don’t seem to be able to make a play when we need it.”

A Roanoke win tonight could have put the second place Dazzle back at the top as the Columbus Riverdragons lost to the Huntsville Flight 96-94, but instead, they remain a half game back.

Young’s season high offensive performance was supported by a strong cast, as former Dazzle player Mike King scored 20, Tang Hamilton added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds and league leading assist man Omar Cook notched 12.

The game also matched up the NBDL’s two top leading scorers, Roanoke’s Isiah Victor and Fayetteville’s David Young. The league’s leader Victor came up a bit short as he only managed 22, but was still able to better his average at 18.9 to move him to 19.0 points per game. Young however is narrowing the margin as he is now at 17.8 points per game.

The Dazzle saw a quality output from their offense tonight as Victor led them with 22 points. Sung-Yoon Bang and Seth Doliboa teamed up for 17 a piece, while Garry Hill-Thomas came off the bench to contribute 13. James Thomas achieved yet another double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, while Miah Davis contributed 10.

As the Dazzle shot an uncharacteristic 36.7% from the field, Davison was understandably disappointed with the results. “We had lay-ups and wide open looks. We just didn’t make any shots. When you don’t make shots, you don’t win. It’s pretty simple.”

Roanoke takes on the Fayetteville Patriots again tomorrow, Sunday, March 20 at 4 p.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center. For more information log on to www.nbdl.com or visit www.roanokedazzle.com.
