(Bridgeport, Conn. - March 14, 2013) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the acquisition and signing of catcher Yusuf Carter from the Somerset Patriots in exchange for pitcher Brad Thompson.
"Carter is a great addition to this ballclub," says Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. "He is an experienced catcher with tremendous ability behind that plate and brings a powerful bat to our lineup." "Brad had a desire to play in Somerset this season. It is fortunate for everyone involved that we could make this deal happen", added 'Fish GM Ken Shepard.
Carter makes his way to Bridgeport for his third season in the Atlantic League and ninth of professional baseball. In 82 games with Somerset last year, the backstop batted .209 with 12 home runs, 38 RBI, and 33 runs scored.
The 28-year-old, who is the nephew of former big leaguer Joe Carter, began his career with the Chicago Cubs organization after being selected in the 12th round of the 2005 amateur draft. He spent four seasons in the Cubs farm system, followed by three years with the Oakland Athletics organization, reaching as high as the Double-A level. The Brooklyn native then made his Atlantic League debut with the Patriots in 2011. He has slugged at least 10 home runs in six of his eight professional seasons, including a career-high 14 with Single-A Stockton of the California League in 2009. In 636 career games, Yusuf owns a .241 batting average with 90 home runs, 341 RBI, 314 runs scored and 54 stolen bases.
