Pat Coyle Named Mammoth General Manager; Brad Self Named Assistant General Manager
The Colorado Mammoth today announced that Pat Coyle has been named the team's general manager. Concurrently, the Mammoth announced that Brad Self, who retired from the National Lacrosse League (NLL) on Friday, July 26, 2019, has been named the team's assistant general manager.
Coyle previously served as the Mammoth's interim general manager in the 2018-19 season; his seventh season behind the Mammoth bench and his second full season as the team's head coach.
The Mammoth made a triumphant return to the NLL Division Final in 2019, under Coyle's leadership. After Coyle acquired two key veteran players before the March NLL trade deadline, the Mammoth launched a midseason three-game win streak, notching two of the three wins on back-to-back game days and building momentum toward an explosive NLL West Division Semifinal game. In the Semifinal, Colorado beat the Saskatchewan Rush 11-10 in overtime. The win was momentous as the Mammoth had never beat the three-time NLL Champions in Saskatchewan and had never beat them in the postseason.
"I'm thankful to the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment Ownership Group for their continued support and the opportunity to lead the Mammoth team and organization for a second season," said Coyle. "Our future is really bright. We're a young team and have a sixth overall draft pick this year to strengthen our roster. We have, potentially, the best goalie in the league and our defense is solid. I think things look good."
Self's professional box lacrosse career spanned 14 years, beginning with the Ottowa Rebels in 2002-03 and ending with the Colorado Mammoth in 2018-19. In his final season, the left-handed transition player posted seven points from four goals, including his 100th career goal, and three assists.
Selected by the Buffalo Bandits in the second round (18th overall) of the 2001 NLL Draft, Self posted a career total of 281 regular-season points (103g/178a) in 162 NLL contests, spending most of his career - five seasons (2012-16) - with the Rochester Knighthawks, during which time he became a three-time NLL Champion (2012-14), the 2016 NLL Transition Player of the Year and a 2016 All-Pro. The Peterborough, ON native spent four full seasons over two playing stints (2004-05, 2017-19) with the Mammoth, initially joining the team as a free agent in 2004, then returning in 2017 after being acquired in a trade with Buffalo.
Self initially joined the Mammoth's front office in 2018 as the organization's youth lacrosse development manager, partnering with 11 Colorado youth lacrosse programs to lead introductory lacrosse clinics for 2,700 local students in 2018-19.
"The Colorado Mammoth has not only been a huge part of my lacrosse career but of my personal life as well," said Self. "I met my wife, Alicia, here in Colorado and now, with our two children, we call Denver home. I can't thank the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment Ownership Group enough for the opportunity to lead one of the premier teams in the NLL. I'm looking forward to working alongside Pat and the rest of the front office, as well as our coaching staff and players."
