Pappas Drives Skyhawks

Worcester Tornadoes News Release

AUGUSTA, NJ--- Another promising start to a ballgame was derailed by a SkyHawk rally. The Tornadoes lost 9-5 on Sunday from a sun-drenched Skylands Park, once again dropping them into the CanAm cellar. Worcester scored three with two outs in the top of the first on four straight hits from the middle of their order capped off with a two RBI double from Nick Salotti. Sussex immediately had an answer in the bottom half, scoring six against Worcester starter Matt Weagle (1-4), saddled with his fourth loss of the season.

It was the Mark Pappas show early and often for the home team. The light hitting shortstop, without a long ball this season, launched a grand slam in the bottom of the first, picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center in the third, and added a sixth with a single in the fifth. Five of his six runs batted in came with two outs, all in support of Mike Schellinger (3-2). Schellinger was shaky, but made it through five innings sitting down four to pick up one in the win column. Left handed reliever Alex Smith pitched in with three and two thirds of relief before newly dubbed closed Sandy Nin, was summoned to get the final out with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth.

Worcester will try to split tomorrow evening at Skylands Park by sending RHP Chris Farley against the league leader in strikeouts RHP Justin Knoff at 7:05pm.
