Panthers Lose to Throwbacks

Chicago, IL - Sunday, January 18, 2009, just coming off a grueling loss on Saturday, the Detroit Panthers are looking to gain a 3-2 record by defeating the Chicago Throwbacks. With Chicago's James Booyer (20), small forward, making the first team foul less than 30 seconds into the game, Detroit's Corey Gupton (44), power forward, makes the first two points of the game. However Chicago gained on Detroit mid-way through the first to end the quarter with a five point lead over Detroit, 24-19.

It started out a repeat of the first, but with five minutes left in the quarter, Detroit's, Giovanni Riley (1), point guard, exploded with three aggressive steals resulting in six unanswered points by Chicago. A succession of three points from Chicago mixed with turnovers from Detroit put the Throwbacks up by 12. Detroit turned on the defensive heat and got physical as they fought their way back; but Chicago still held a seven point lead over Detroit, 54-47 at the half.

Third quarter was a tight race with the Panthers taking a one point lead but the Throwbacks came back and took it over.

In the fourth, the Panthers hustled the ball down the court with a fever. Blocked shots and grabbed rebounds brought the game within a one point lead with one minute left on the clock. . Taking it to the wire, 5.4 seconds left on the clock, Chicago calls for a time out after Detroit's James Head (14), small forward, makes one of two free throw shots. The score tied 97-97 sending the game into overtime.

With six team fouls against Detroit, which Chicago took full advantage by making every free throw pulled the Throwbacks to a 119-107 win making the Detroit's record 2-3.
