Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
The Palm Beach Cardinals leaned on clutch outs on Friday night against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, stranding 14 men on base and holding on for a 2-1 win. The Cardinals move back above .500 overall with the triumph and clinch at least a share of the six-game series with their third straight win.
Although starting pitcher Trent Baker allowed six hits in five and 1/3 innings pitched, he exited the game with the lead and was credited with the win. The native of Austin, Tex. struck out 10 batters while allowing just one earned run. Jose Moreno stepped in for Baker and tossed one and 2/3 frames before Andrew Marrero shut the door with a two-inning, six-strikeout save, his first of 2022.
Lakeland's first baserunner of the evening scored on a first-inning RBI double. But the Flying Tigers would go 0-14 with their remaining runners on base, and hit a paltry .059 with runners in scoring position Friday. In all but the first, fifth, and ninth innings, the Detroit affiliate would put multiple runners on base. In the third and the seventh, Lakeland would put each of their first two batters on before an out was recorded. But the Cardinals kept the visitors off the scoreboard after the initial frame and finished the evening with its only 1-2-3 inning of the matchup in the ninth.
Palm Beach tied the game at 1 on a throwing error off the bat of Jeremy Rivas in the third with two outs. Matt Chamberlain doubled in the fifth to give the Beach Birds their only lead of the night, but an advantage that stuck for the remainder of the evening. Chamberlain was 3-4 as the leadoff batter Friday, while Lizandro Espinoza went 1-2 with two walks in the eighth spot.
The Cardinals are back on Saturday night and will attempt to clinch the series over Lakeland. It will be Kids Club Saturday at the ballpark! In addition, we'll be having Beers Around the Bases before the game, where fans can sip beers throughout Downtown Abacoa and win a prize pack presented by Southern Eagle Distributing!
