Palm Beach Gets Back to .500 on Bernal Grand Slam
June 28, 2022 - Florida State League (FSL)
Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
In the quickest Palm Beach Cardinals nine-inning home game this season, Leonardo Bernal hit a grand slam that would prove decisive, as the Beach Birds would take a 4-1 win over the Daytona Tortugas at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Tuesday night in Jupiter.
The Panamanian's homer was his first of the season and in his full-season Minor League career. The 18-year-old catcher played in the Dominican Summer League last season, and joined Palm Beach from Extended Spring Training on June 5. Bernal was down 1-2 in the count with two outs in the sixth inning, after Darlin Moquete, Matt Chamberlain and Jeremy Rivas had all worked walks against Daytona reliever and losing pitcher Jose Franco.
On the winning side of Tuesday's matchup was Cardinal starter Inohan Paniagua, who improved his record to 5-4 with a seven-frame gem. The 22-year-old Dominican struck out eight hitters and allowed just six baserunners and one run. Paniagua also upped his ERA to 2.33 and strikeout total to 91, both Florida State League-leading marks.
Coming back from a fourth-inning Tortuga run, the Cardinals extend their winning streak to seven, and have won 13 of their past 16 games after taking all six contests against the St. Lucie Mets a week ago. After starting the season 14-27, Palm Beach is now 34-34 overall and 4-0 in the 2nd half of the 2022 season.
Palm Beach will return to action against the Tortugas with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch Wednesday night at RDCS. It will be Silver Sluggers Night at the ballpark, and No. 10 Cardinals prospect Tink Hence will be on the mound!
