
Pair of Roadrunners garner POTW honors

(Dublin, CA. June 9, 2008) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that RHP Harold Williams of the St. George Roadrunners has been named Safeway Pitcher of the Week while OF Maikel Jova of the Yuma Scorpions has been named Safeway Player of the Week for their performances during the second week of the 2008 Golden Baseball League season.
Williams, 23, 6-4, 195 lbs is a left-handed pitcher who was drafted out of Mt. San Jacinto College in southern California by the Seattle Mariners in the 38th round of the 2004 draft. After three years in Seattle's minor league organization he had advanced to the High A level but was released even though he had a lifetime minor league E.R.A. of just 2.96 and had struck out over a batter per inning in a total of 58 games primarily as a reliever. He joined St. George just after the season started and in two relief appearances last week he was unscored upon in four innings of work posting an E.R.A. of 0.00, won both games to establish a 2-0 record and struck out five batters.
Jova, 26, 6-1, 200 lbs is an outfielder who was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as an 18-year old after escaping Cuba in 2000. He rose through the Toronto organization over the next six years, reaching AAA Syracuse in 2006 before being released. He joined the Yuma Scorpions last year and led the GBL in RBIs while hittng at a .318 clip for the season. Last week he hit. .536 as he went 15-28 and led the GBL in hits (15), runs scored (10), Home Runs (3), and RBIs (13).
