Yuma Scorpions News Release
Going into Tuesday June 3rd, the Scorpions were 7-1 and leading the league. Now after losing 5 of 6 to the two Canadian teams, the Edmonton Cracker Cats and the Calgary Vipers, the Scorpions are looking for answers.
In the first series of last week, the Scorpions were up against the Edmonton Cracker Cats, who came into the series 2-6. The Cracker Cats were on a 6 game losing streak and hadn't won since the opening two days of the season. In the opening game of the series, the Scorpions lost 10-7, but the game wasn't as close as the score shows. The Scorpions starting pitcher, Roger Luque, struggled and the Scorpions were manhandled by the Cracker Cats. The second game of the series saw pretty muchthe same only worse, when the Scorpions lost 22-9. Although the Scorpions are putting up decent numbers offensively, the Scorpions pitching can't seem to shut down the opponents.
In the final game against the Cracker Cats, the Scorpions had a decent game, only to see it disappear in the ninth inning. Going into the ninth, the Scorpions were leading 5-3, and ended up losing the game 8-5. The Cracker Cats hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth to win the game. The Scorpions at that point had lost their league leading status and their record was now 7-4.
Then it appeared that the Scorpions had figured it out when Mike Esposito pitched a great game at the start of the series against the Calgary Vipers. The Scorpions won that game 21-7. The Scorpions used a strong offensive showing by their muscle men, Maikel Jova and group. The Scorpions improved to 8-4 on the season and appeared to be out of their slump. Then in game two of the series, the Scorpions lost on a controversial call in the ninth inning. Going into the ninth inning, the Scorpions were losing 12-10. With no outs, it appeared that Jorge Perez got the batter to ground into a 463 double play. However, the umpires determined that the shortstop was not on the bag and therefore the runner was safe at second base. Calgary would score a run in the top of the inning. The Scorpions would go on and score two runs, but lose the game 13-12.
In the final game of the series before their long two week road trip, the Scorpions and Vipers duked it out in El Centro, CA. The Scorpions were again manhandled behind a rough outting by Roger Luque and the relief pitchers. The Vipers scored 10 runs on the Scorpions and were able to hold the Scorpions to only 4 hits and 2 runs.
The Scorpions are now going on a 2 week road trip away from the comforts of Desert Sun Stadium. The Scorpions will be playing 6 games against the Orange County Flyers and 3 games against the Long Beach Armada, before returning home, where they will be playing the St. George Roadrunners.
