San Rafael Pacifics News Release
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - San Rafael Pacifics starter Bennett Whitmore pitched a tidy eight innings and led his ballclub to a 7-0 victory over the Hawaii Stars to take the series on Sunday.
Whitmore, who has now tossed 17 consecutive shutout innings, allowed just four hits and issued one walk. He improved to 9-2 and has won eight of his last nine appearances with a no decision sprinkled in.
"Our guys make plays so you just let them [opposing batters] put it in play," said Whitmore, who pitched to contact but didn't strike out any on Saturday. "Today it felt like I had one pitch and it just happened to be working so I kept it simple."
Maikel Jova singled home Price Kendall (4-for-4, three runs, RBI, SB) in the first inning and broke it open with a three-run third. San Rafael (52-17) piled up 12 hits in the game and added two more runs in the seventh and a run in the ninth.
The Stars (26-38) used six pitchers in the game and weren't helped by their defense's three errors. Starter Matt Stropoli (3-5) lasted just three innings and surrendered seven hits and four runs, three earned.
Kendall's perfect day gives him a Pacific Association-best .357 batting average. He continues to lead the league in hits (95) and runs (72). Jova, who went 2-for-4, drove in three RBIs to pass Kendall for the league lead with 65 RBIs. Backup outfielder Morgan Mickan got the start and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
"The guys in the bullpen said to use my speed as a weapon so I laid down a bunt and it worked," said Mickan. "When you get your at-bats enjoy it and work on things you've been struggling with and give it all you've got."
San Rafael took the season series vs. the Stars 12-3 and will now take on Na Koa Ikaika Maui. The Pacifics welcome the "Return of the Spaceman" from Tuesday, August 20 to Thursday, August 22. Former major leaguer and Marin native Bill "Spaceman" Lee will serve as the Pacifics' designated hitter on Tuesday and will play all nine positions on Wednesday. On Thursday, the first 500 fans will receive a Bill Lee bobblehead presented by Bradley Real Estate. Tickets are available atwww.pacificsbaseball.com.
