San Rafael Pacifics News Release
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Before Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Vallejo Admirals, the San Rafael Pacifics had outscored their opponents 48-11. On Sunday, the Pacifics managed just four hits and were held scoreless for the first time this season in a 1-0 loss to Vallejo.
San Rafael (36-14) manager Ryan Priddy downplayed the team's two-game hiccup in the loss column, which was just the second time this season that the ballclub has lost back-to-back games.
"[Tyler] Pearson pitched an unbelievable game and didn't deserve to lose that game. Calls didn't go our way but that's baseball," said Priddy. "We played a great ballgame, we've had a couple of good games with these guys. We'll come out tomorrow and attack it again."
The call that didn't go the Pacifics' way came in the ninth inning. Reliever JJ Whetsel allowed a bloop single to load the bases. He then induced a groundball to the right side of the infield. Baserunner Ted Lemasters collided with Price Kendall who went to field a grounder to the right side and the ball ended up in shallow right field after Kendall was blocked from fielding the ball cleanly. Priddy came out to argue but to no avail. The Pacifics caught a break when another runner was caught between third and home and was tagged by catcher Kevin Reinking, who appeared to make the tag with an empty glove and ball in hand.
In the Pacifics half of the ninth, Paul Geuy set down the heart of the order for his second save. Vallejo starter Kyle Brueggemann (2-0) matched Pearson with seven strikeouts over eight innings to lower his ERA to .81 in three starts.
The loss by Pearson was just his second of the season. He dominated for eight innings of shutout ball, scattering three hits while striking out eight to bring his league-best total to 79 and ERA to 2.08. However, he was charged with the losing run after exiting in the ninth with a pair of baserunners still on.
The two teams face off again on Sunday, July 28 for a 1:15 p.m. first pitch. It is "Bark in the Park" presented by Marin Pet Hospital and Pet Emergency Center and fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the game. Dogs will also be available for adoption at the game from Marin Humane Society. Tickets are available here.
