San Rafael Pacifics News Release
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - The San Rafael Pacifics today announced the resigning of the core of its 2012 North American League championship team. The Pacifics will be bringing back six position players and two pitchers in an effort to repeat with another championship season in 2013.
League MVP, Maikel Jova, who led the Pacifics with a .341 batting average and constructed a league record 37 game hitting streak between June 5th and July 26th , 2012, will anchor the 2013 Pacifics squad along with fellow slugger Johnny Woodard (.275 batting average, 36 RBI) who led the team with 10 home runs. Jova and Woodard were named to the 2012 North American Baseball League All Star team.
Joining Jova and Woodard are outfielders Zack Pace (.948 fielding percentage) and San Rafael native, Steve Detwiler. Shortstop Darrick Hale (.279 BA, 5 HRs) and catcher, D.J. Dixon (.286 BA in 47 games for the Sonoma Grapes) had their contracts renewed, and will report to the team in spring training. Dixon was traded to San Rafael in August and played in six games for the Pacifics.
Julian Arballo (37.1 innings, 3.85 ERA), and All Star left-hander Matt Stabelfeld (2.22 ERA, 4 saves) are the only two returning members from the bullpen.
Former Pacifics second baseman, Chase Fontaine, will come to spring training as a non-roster invitee. The former 2nd round pick in the 2006 MLB Draft hit .294 in 48 games for San Rafael before being traded to the Schaumburg Boomers (Frontier League).
"We are determined to bring another championship to San Rafael and this is an important and crucial first step towards reaching that goal," said Pacifics President and General Manager, Mike Shapiro. "These guys are not only great ballplayers but quality individuals who will continue to represent the Pacifics and City of San Rafael at the highest level on the field and in the community."
