San Rafael Pacifics News Release
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - The San Rafael Pacifics announced on Monday, March 18, that former Major League pitcher, Jeff Russell, has been named the team's pitching coach for the 2013 season.
Russell, a 14 year MLB veteran from 1983 to 1996, pitched for the Cincinnati Reds, Texas Rangers, Oakland A's, Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. A two-time All Star in 1988 and 1989, Russell amassed 189 career saves and in 1989 led the American League in saves (38) as a member of the Texas Rangers and won the 1989 Rolaids Relief Man of the Year Award. The right-hander owns a career 3.38 earned run average.
"I'm so pleased to join the Pacifics and can't wait for spring training," the Cincinnati native said. "I'm really looking forward to spending this summer in Marin County and to help 'Friz' (Pacifics Manager, James Frisbie) and Mike (Shapiro) bring another championship to this community."
Russell's oldest son, James, is a relief pitcher with the Chicago Cubs and his youngest, Casey, recently inked a contract with the Pacifics and will compete for a starting rotation spot during spring training.
"Having both Jeff and Casey Russell on the team this year is a huge shot in the arm for our ballclub," said Frisbie. "Jeff will be a huge asset for all our pitchers but he'll also be able to continue his work with Casey, who we expect to be a key contributor to our pitching staff this season."
