SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - The San Rafael Pacifics played a close-fought battle with the Na Koa Ikaika Maui but San Rafael fell late, bowing 7-4 in the final game of the regular season.
Chase Fontaine followed up a 5-for-5 night on Friday with a 3-for-5 day on Saturday with a a run and an RBI. Maikel Jova launched his fifth homer of the season to give San Rafael (54-20) an early 2-0 lead in the third.
San Rafael's lead evaporated quickly in the fifth when Maui struck for four runs. Fontaine misplayed a ball, which allowed Angus Roeger to score easily. Bennett Whitmore (9-3) retired the next two batters but gave up three consecutive RBI base hits that put Maui (44-29) in front 4-2.
San Rafael got a run in the back in the seventh but reliever Nate King gave up a three-run homer to Brandon Gregorich after inheriting a pair runners in the eighth. Morgan Mickan drove home Matt Kavanaugh in the bottom of the eighth before San Rafael went down in order in the ninth.
Over his last four games, Fontaine is 10 for his last 17 (.588) with three runs and eight RBIs. Price Kendall, whose 99 hits leads the Pacific Association, was denied his 100th of the season after going hitless on Saturday. He'll have his last crack at 100 on Sunday when the Pacifics play in the 2013 Pacific Association Championship at 5:00 p.m., presented by First Federal Savings & Loan.
"We're going to go about it the same way we do every game. There's no need to change our approach now. We're obviously in first place and clinched the division for a reason," said Darrick Hale, who helped the Pacifics win the North American League Championship in 2012.
"I think we're going to go about our business," added Hale. "We lost the first one before the Championships last year so I'm not too worried about it. It'll be interesting to see who we face."
The Pacifics will face the winner of the 1:00 p.m. semifinal game between the No. 3 seed Vallejo Admirals and No. 2 Maui. The winner of that game will have a quick turnaround, having to face No. 1 San Rafael at 5:00 p.m.. Fans need just one ticket for the both games. Tickets are available at www.pacificsbaseball.com.
