March 5, 2021 - Canadian Premier League (CPL) - Pacific FC News Release

Victoria, BC - The much-loved captain of Pacific FC, Marcel de Jong, (mar-sell de yong) announced his retirement from the game of soccer today ending a stellar professional career and 56 caps earned with Canada's men's national team.

The 34-year-old's professional career includes 250 appearances with top tier clubs in Europe and North America. A defender who also played at midfield, de Jong joined Pacific FC in February 2019, but suffered an injury to his Achilles tendon in spring training. De Jong returned to the pitch for the abbreviated 2020 season where he served as a constant role model to the young squad.

"It's been an honour to have Marcel be part of our club for the past two seasons," said Rob Friend, CEO, Pacific FC. "He has been a leader on an off the pitch and we wish him the best in his retirement."

Born in Newmarket, Ontario, de Jong holds dual citizenship with Canada and the Netherlands. His professional career includes stints in the Netherlands with Helmond Sport and Roda JC, where he played for four years, and later in Germany for FC Augsburg. He gained notoriety during three seasons in the MLS with the Whitecaps FC.

Statement from Marcel:

After 17 years as a professional football player, I have made the difficult decision to officially hang up my boots and pursue another exciting venture.

It's been a sad couple of days, reflecting on the fact that I will no longer be on the pitch playing., But I will be forever grateful to Pacific for the time I've had at the club and on the Island which I will continue to call my home.

To the fans, I want to thank you for your unconditional continuing support and belief in me! You guys are amazing, the true heart and soul of this game and the reason we do what we do!

To my family, you continue to support and stand by my every move and for that I am truly blessed, this next chapter is for you!
