P-Nats Outlast Salem Sox in 14
April 10, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
After the rainout on opening night, the Potomac Nationals and Salem Red Sox knew it would be a long Friday night. They just didn't know how long.
An epic pitchers duel broke out at Pfitzner Stadium in the second half of the season-opening doubleheader and didn't end until the 14th inning when Nick Arata drove in Brian Peacock with a single to centerfield.
The game had a little bit of everything. What began as a pitchers' duel ended with an unlikely winning pitcher. Robbie Jacobsen came on to pitch the 14th - after Nick Moresi had tossed two scoreless innings of his own - and got the victory after Arata's heroics.
Marcos Frias pitched five and a third innings of one-run ball, and he was matched by Brock Huntzinger's four and two thirds.
Early on, the game looked like anything but a low-scoring affair. Mike Burgess drove Boomer Whiting in with an opposite field single in the first inning; Salem quickly tied the game in the top of the second. After Ryan Lavarnway led off the frame with a double to right and advanced to third on a Will Middlebrooks groundout, David Mailman then walked and stole second base. Will Vazquez then sent a bullet into right field that scored Lavarnway, but Burgess nailed Mailman at the plate with a perfect throw.
The game would stay scoreless into the 14th - even though both teams had several chances in extra innings to end it. The P-Nats got a triple from Jacobsen in the ninth and leadoff doubles in the 12th and 13th innings. They could bring none of those runners home until Arata sealed Potomac's first win in the 14th.
Salem won Friday's first game, a continuation of the postponed opening night game, 6-4. Kyle Fernandez picked up the win for Salem and Clayton Dill got the loss for the P-Nats. Oscar Tejeda paced the Salem offensive with two RBI and a run on a two-for-five night. Will Middlebrooks (1-3) also scored two runs and plated a third.
The Potomac Nationals and Salem Red Sox face off Saturday at 6:35 p.m. at Pfitzner Stadium. Saturday is the first fireworks show of the 2010 season.
