Winston-Salem Dash News Release
KINSTON, NC - Alex White had an impressive professional debut for the Kinston Indians (1-0), going five shutout innings as the K-Tribe topped the Winston-Salem Dash 4-1 on Saturday night at Grainger Stadium. The Dash has lost two in a row since winning the season opener.
White (1-0), a Greenville, NC native and first round draft pick out of UNC, lived up to his advance billing when he recorded five strikeouts over the first two innings and seven total on the night.
Kinston jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning without the benefit of a hit or a ball leaving the infield. Charlie Leesman (0-1), making his Dash debut, walked the first two batters he faced. Donnie Webb's sacrifice bunt put men on second and third with one out before Nate Recknagel drove one in with a groundout to shortstop.
The Indians struck for two more in the third inning. With one out, Webb reached on a Leesman throwing error and scored when Recknagel sliced an RBI double down the left field line. Two batters later, Karexon Sanchez looped a single to center, scoring Recknagel and giving the K-Tribe a 3-0 lead.
Leesman left after three innings, allowing two hits, three runs (one earned), three walks and one strikeout. Two 30-plus pitch innings led to the early exit.
The Dash (0-1) dented the scoreboard in the sixth inning after White departed. Facing reliever David Roberts, Eduardo Escobar led off the frame with a single and eventually moved to third on a back-to-back wild pitch-passed ball sequence. Seth Loman drove him in with a single to center to cut the Kinston lead to 3-1. The run ended a 15-inning scoreless drought for the Dash, dating to the eighth inning on Thursday night.
Kinston added an insurance run in the eighth inning to restore its three-run lead. Indians closer Steve Smith worked a scoreless ninth inning for his first save of the season as the Dash fell for the second-straight night.
Winston tries to even the four-game series on Sunday afternoon when RHP Nevin Griffith (0-0, 0.00) makes his Dash debut. He will be opposed by Indians lefty T.J. House (0-0, 0.00).
First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 2 p.m. The audio webcast pre-game show begins at 1:45 on www.wsdash.com.
The Dash home opener and the first game at BB&T Ballpark is Tuesday, April 13 at 7 p.m. against the Potomac Nationals.
