Woodbridge, VA (April 10, 2010) - Drew Hedman went 3-4 to lead Salem's offense and Fabian Williamson set the tone on the mound as the Red Sox improved to 2-1 on the young season with an 8-3 triumph over Potomac on Saturday evening at Pfitzner Stadium. Hedman pounded two doubles in his first two at-bats, while Williamson tossed five strong innings to earn his first Carolina League victory on the hill. With a limited bullpen due to Friday's 14-inning fiasco, Caleb Clay threw the final four frames in relief, earning a save for his efforts.
The Red Sox broke open a scoreless game in the top of the third inning. After Will Vazquez was hit by a Brad Peacock pitch, Hedman's first two-bagger made it 1-0. Two batters later, Ryan Dent belted a line drive into the left-center field gap for an RBI triple. Not to be outdone, Tim Federowicz crushed a deep drive over the left field fence for a two-run round-tripper, the first home run of the season for Salem, making the score 4-0.
Potomac scored their only run off Williamson in the bottom of the fourth, when Brian Peacock singled home Michael Burgess with two outs. But Salem would quickly respond in the top of the fifth, as Hedman drilled his second double and later scored on Dent's sacrifice fly to left field. Up 5-1, the Red Sox tacked on three more runs in the top of the eighth. Alex Hassan doubled and Mitch Dening walked to set the table with one out. Up next, Oscar Tejeda doubled to center field scoring one, and Will Vazquez singled to left plating two more. Through three games, Tejeda and Vazquez lead the Red Sox with three RBI each.
Williamson allowed just one run on four hits in his five innings of work, striking out two and walking one to pick up the W. In relief, Clay surrendered two runs on three hits over four innings, picking up one strikeout without issuing any walks.
The Red Sox now will aim to take three out of four from the Nationals as they ready for the series finale on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05, and righthander Alex Wilson will make his season debut against Patrick Lehman for Potomac.
