Potomac Nationals News Release
(SALEM, VA) Chris Hernandez was in total control on Tuesday night in Salem, allowing just one hit to the Potomac Nationals in seven innings and leading the Red Sox to a 3-0 win in the series opener at LewisGale Field. The Nationals mustered just two hits and four base runners on a night where Sammy Solis's early shakiness proved costly.
Solis allowed individual runs in the first three innings - a streak that would have continued were it not for a pair of outstanding throws from the outfield. Bryce Brentz homered in the first and third innings for two of the three Sox runs. The third was plated in the second: Miles Head led off the inning with a triple to left and scored on Jorge Padron's sacrifice fly to left field.
The newest P-Nat, Zach Walters - who was received in the trade that sent Jason Marquis to the Arizona Diamondbacks - got the Nationals first hit in the second inning. They would not get another hit until Eury Perez singled with one out in the ninth - and they had just two base runners in that span. Jeff Kobernus walked in the seventh, and Sandy Leon reached on an error in the eighth.
Overall, Hernandez moved to 10-5, becoming the third pitcher in the league with ten wins. He went seven innings, allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out five.
Solis fell to 4-2; over seven innings, he allowed three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and a walk. It was the third time in six starts Solis has lasted seven innings.
In consecutive innings, the Nationals made spectacular throws home to gun down Salem runners. With one out in the fourth and Miles Head at third, Peter Hissey hit a line drive to Perez in center. His bullet to the plate beat Head and ended the inning. One frame later, it was J.R. Higley's turn. Higley - who left the game while batting in the ninth inning with an apparent injury - backed up an errant throw from Leon that sailed into right field. Kolbrin Vitek tried to score from second base but Higley nailed him with a beautiful one-hop throw.
Potomac (50-56, 22-16) continues the series with Salem (47-59, 16-21) Wednesday night. Paul Demny takes the mound against Stolmy Pimentel at 7:05 P.M.
