Providence Bruins News Release
Portland, ME - The Providence Bruins dropped a 6-3 decision to the Portland Pirates this evening at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Carter Camper and Josh Hennessy scored on the power play for the Providence, while Kevan Miller added an even-strength bid of his own.
The Pirates struck three times in the opening period, including a goal with the extra skater. Portland got on the board first with the first of two goals from Brett MacLean. He deflected a Nathan Oystrick slapper just inside the near post eight minutes into the game. At 15:27 of the period, the Pirates extended their lead to a pair of goals with another MacLean lamp-lighter. The second time around, MacLean slapped the loose puck in in almost the same spot he did to put Portland on top. Michael Hutchinson made the initial save, but the puck trickled past him, and MacLean made him pay.
Just over a minute later, Providence cut the Pirates' lead to a goal with a power play strike from Camper. It took just over 30 seconds with the extra skater as Carter beat Justin Pogge top shelf on a one-timer from the near faceoff circle.
Dean Arsene capped the first period scoring with goal less than 60 seconds after the P-Bruins scored on the man advantage. After a quick rush into the offensive zone, Arsene's wrister beat Hutchinson to his left.
In the second period, Portland's Ethan Werek notched a goal on wrister from the far side at 6:35. The 4-1 advantage was the largest lead for either team in the game. Five minutes later, Miller scored his second P-Bruins goal with a slapper from outside the far circle. Bobby Robbinsmade his presence felt throughout the game, with a fight, a few aggressive plays, and a screen of Pogge on the second Providence goal.
The P-Bruins started the third period scoring with Hennessy's 11th goal of the year. Josh beat Pogge with a wrister from the near faceoff circle top-shelf at 2:18 of the frame. The Brockton, Mass. native's goal came on the only 5-on-3 for either team all night, with just 11 seconds remaining on the opportunity. MacLean committed one of his two penalties for the first infraction, while a Ryan Hollweg double minor set up the two-man advantage.
The Pirates extended their lead back to two goals (5-3) with a Matt Watkins slapper at 12:33 of the game's final period, and Brock Trotter added an empty-netter from the far side of the red line to end the night's scoring with just over two minutes left.
Hutchinson suffered the loss, but added 25 saves to his season total. Pogge picked up the win with a 26-save effort. Providence was 2-for-7 on the power play and 1-for-2 killing penalties.
The P-Bruins have two games remaining in their four-game road trip with bouts against Springfield and Manchester left on the 2011 docket.
